Lizzy the Oil Rig Worker
Teamwork on a North Sea oil rig
is the life for Lizzy.
Lizzy Lorimer is an apprentice instrument and
control technician, working in Scotland’s offshore industry. The
21-year-old always liked maths, physics, craft and design at
school, and thought about a career in bricklaying or plumbing.
However, coming from Ayr she started to think about working on
oil rigs and got a job with Petrofac.
She takes care of all the instruments on board
the rigs, testing and recalibrating them to ensure that they are
100 per cent accurate.
Now she is training towards her NVQ and hopes to
start on a degree course after that. Lizzy says: ‘Everyone
working offshore will agree that the money is great – I am going
to be able to buy my first flat very soon. I also enjoy being
part of a team on board.
‘Once I am
qualified, I could think about working in the Gulf or even
farther afield – but for the moment I am very happy working in
the North Sea.’
